With the famous London heatwave bringing the city to a boil, bars and restaurants offering al fresco drinking and dining are on fire, and Clerkenwell & Social is definitely the one to take advantage of in the awesome summery weather. With a big outdoors space, hand-crafted pizzas and unique house infused cocktails to chat about work and fun stuff over, this place is set to become Clerkenwell’s creative professionals new mecca.
Situated in St John’s Square, Clerkenwell a 5 minute walk from Farringdon tube station and a stone’s throw from Clerkenwell Road, Clerkenwell & Social is perfect for those hungry for some post-work catch up with work buddies and friends. Not a complete stranger to the area (it’s home to quite a few exciting startups such as my fav Urban Massage who started their journey in White Bear Yard in Clerkenwell and which I reviewed in my blog a few times), I stopped by Clerkenwell & Social on a hot Friday evening to ring into the weekend on a positive note (you simply can’t go wrong with pizza and cocktails!).
There are three ways to enjoy your evening: order drinks at the bar and head outside to join the flock of creative professionals at a big outdoor terrace, head to the 1st floor for a relax sit-down dinner or have the best of both worlds by grabbing a table by the window at the bar (that way you can still have the food, watch the crowd and catch the music from the live DJ). Loving to be in the epicentre of events, a friend of mine and I went for the third option.
Arancini with mushrooms & truffle oil, Portobello and Prosciutto pizzas and Social Salad with lots of greens, avocado and pine nuts that we chose to top up our energy levels after the busy working week were accompanied by a couple of rounds of cocktails. Food was very delicious – you can definitely tell that all the ingredients are locally sourced from the finest suppliers and everything on our menu is hand prepared by the restaurant’s chefs (albeit pizza was a little too salty for me which is probably more down to my fairly healthy eating which cleans the palette and you start feeling how sweet any given bar of chocolate is and how salty all the usual meals are).
When it comes to cocktails, I was lost for choice as an interesting and unique cocktail list was created by the team of mixologists (there is a well sourced wine list and good range of bottled beer available, too).
Kaffirinha (caipirinha with a twist) & Pride & Passion Martini were my favourites, while Love Is A Smoke cocktail featuring Merlot, Aperol & Campari and home made Louisiana style bourbon infused with smoke apple-wood chips giving the drink a strong smokey flavour – is not for the light-hearted. Go for it if you want a strong drink like no other.
If you need more convincing, there is a DJ playing on Fridays from 6 pm till late, 2for1 cocktails Monday to Friday from 5 to 8 pm (exactly!) and 2for1 pizzas offer all day Saturday. Enjoy getting social! 🙂
